Walking exercises have been found to improve outcomes for people suffering from peripheral artery disease (PAD). Specifically, among adults with PAD and intermittent claudication, a home-based, walking exercise behavior change intervention, compared with usual care, resulted in improved walking distance at three months. However, authors of the JAMA study concluded that further research is needed to determine the durability of these findings.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the US continued to rise during the first year of the pandemic. For the first time in seven years, the overall number of reported STD cases was lower than the previous year, but the CDC attributed the drop-off to a decline in reported cases of chlamydia — the nation’s most common STD — that was likely a result of pandemic-related interruptions to screening.

“There have been a handful of cases which have now held, for one reason or another, that a third party can pursue a claim against a health care practitioner if they were injured as a result of that health care practitioner’s negligence to his or her own patient. What does this mean practically speaking? It opens the door for more lawsuits, lawsuits from people who were never your patient, but who may be impacted by a prescribing decision you make for your patient.”

New research into intermittent fasting has found that the practice is generally safe, producing few gastrointestinal, neurologic, hormonal, or metabolic effects. Additionally, the research found that intermittent fasting is on par with traditional calorie-restricted diets for weight loss.

According to the final results from the phase 3 PALLAS trial, palbociclib offers no benefit over endocrine therapy alone in women with early HR+ HER2- breast cancer. The primary endpoint — 4-year invasive DFS — was nearly equivalent in the test and control arms of the study. None of the secondary endpoints showed a significant difference either. There was a high rate of palbociclib discontinuation (42%), mostly due to grade 3 or 4 neutropenia. But even in those who completed the two-year planned course showed no benefit over endocrine therapy alone. The results were not just disappointing, but surprising given that CDK 4/6 inhibitors plus endocrine therapy is the standard of care for advanced breast cancer.

This single-arm study of 40 patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) sought to evaluate the potential benefit of a VEGF inhibitor plus a PD-L1 inhibitor. The primary endpoint was objective radiographic response. Responses were seen in 15% to 20% of patients.
