Medscape’s latest Physician Compensation Report for 2024 reveals a 3% average increase in physician salaries, but inflation and pay disparities continue to affect satisfaction. Orthopedics, plastic surgery, and cardiology top the list of highest-paid specialties, while diabetes and endocrinology remain at the bottom. The report also highlights ongoing gender and racial pay gaps, as well as varying levels of salary satisfaction across different specialties.

    • Highest salary satisfaction was reported by:
      • Public health and preventive medicine physicians
      • Dermatologists
      • Psychiatrists

  • Gender Pay Disparities:
    • Male physicians earn 29% more on average than female physicians.
    • The gap for primary care physicians improved slightly from 19% in 2023 to 17% in 2024.

In a recent study, it was shown that female PCPs spend 2.6% more time with patients over the course of the year and also documented 5.9% more diagnoses and placed 19.2% more lab orders for patients. (Wall Street Journal)
