In a scheme to defraud health insurance programs for nearly 10 years, Javaid Perwaiz, MD, caused nearly $21 million in losses to private and government payers for unnecessary surgeries and procedures, such as irreversible hysterectomies, improper sterilizations, and others. He was convicted on 52 counts of healthcare fraud and other charges tied to these unwarranted procedures, and previously faced a conviction for felony tax fraud in the 1990s, as well as earlier accusations of performing unnecessary hysterectomies that led to his firing from a hospital.

For patients being prescribed isotretinoin, there used to be three risk categories: women of reproductive potential, women not of reproductive potential, and males. The new risk classifications are two: those who can become pregnant and those who cannot. This change was based on stakeholder feedback that gender-specific language can be a barrier to access for patients who do not identify with the previous gender-specific patient categories.

Publication: JAMAMethod: Electronic health record (EHR) data from 8 health systems over seven 4-week surveillance periods to identify and assign gestational ages for spontaneous abortions and ongoing pregnancies; analyzed and compared odds of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine in the 28 days prior to spontaneous abortion and ongoing pregnancies.Results: Of 105,446 unique pregnancies, 13,160 spontaneous abortions and 92,286 ongoing pregnancies were identified; spontaneous abortions did not have an increased odds of exposure to a COVID-19 vaccination in the prior 28 days compared with ongoing pregnancies.
