Healthgrades communicates performance in two ways—through ratings and awards—to assist consumers in evaluating and comparing hospital performance specific to specialist service lines and speciality emphasis areas. Using Medicare inpatient data from the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) file purchased from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for the years 2019 through 2021, hospitals were evaluated for overall clinical excellence and measure performance. Data on patient outcomes for 31 diseases or treatments were examined for almost all hospitals in the nation. Also, with the fewest occurrences of 14 avoidable patient safety events, hospitals in the top 10% of the country are honored with the Patient Safety Excellence Award, and analyzing data from surveys of the hospital’s own patients to evaluate patient experience across 10 metrics, the top 15% of hospitals receive the Outstanding Patient Experience Award. Finally, each year, Healthgrades recognizes hospitals in the United States that offer the most common gynecologic treatments and where patients are at a decreased risk of complications during their stay for labor and delivery.

Authors found that in 23.6% of a random sample of 2,809 admissions, there were at least one adverse event. 316 of the 978 adverse events were classified as having a significant or higher severity level, and 222 were deemed to be preventable. In 6.8% of all admissions, an adverse event that could have been avoided happened, and in 1% of those cases, the incident had a serious or higher severity rating. Seven people passed away, one of which was thought to be avoidable. The most frequent adverse events (representing 39.0% of all occurrences) were adverse medication events, which were followed by surgical or other procedural events (30.4%), patient-care events (15.0%), and infections related to medical care (11.9%).

The literature on chronic pain and stigma was reviewed by a group of academics from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, who published their findings in the journal Pain and Therapy. Perhaps most unexpectedly, they discovered that stigma surrounding pain persists even in clinical settings, resulting in clinicians’ inadequate evaluations of patients’ pain, doubt about the reality of their suffering, and lower pain ratings. These factors frequently result in inadequate treatment of pain and a propensity to believe that it is solely a psychological disorder.

Contrary to their counterparts, those who believed in conspiracies, disapproved of the COVID-19 vaccination, or supported alternative medicine were more likely to support the fictitious causes of cancer while being less likely to support the real causes of cancer. These findings imply a clear link between online disinformation and ensuing unhealthy choices, which may account for an additional portion of cancer that is preventable.

This 70-study meta analysis concludes that the evidence is moderate to high that bisphosphonates and denosumab reduce the risk for hip, vertebral, and other fractures.
