The prevalence of neurologic illness in the United States is increasing. In 2019, there were approximately 12,000 neurologists practicing in the United States, which was insufficient to meet the needs of the aging population. Furthermore, many neurologists are subspecialized, and their care may be limited to specific disease states. General neurologists, as defined by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) as “neurologists who are comfortable evaluating and treating patients across the broad spectrum of neurological diseases and do not limit their practice to a specific subspecialty,” are becoming increasingly scarce.

A recent segment of the BBC’s Panorama program revealed that many NHS employees who contracted COVID-19—likely at work—now find themselves abandoned and in a perilous financial situation. The episode profiled NHS employees who are dealing with the long-term health impacts of the COVID-19 infection and revealed the experiences of those who, while being too ill to work, risk losing their jobs or receiving decreased sick pay. Some employees have already experienced this. This physician is one of them.

Reducing unneeded lab work in the hospital setting is a monumental task. It is a kind of security blanket, and it is automated in many EMRs.
