In this JAMA Surgery Original Investigation, the researchers fielded a Swedish cohort study of 48,986 women to discover whether breast conservation offers a survival benefit compared with mastectomy when results are adjusted for main confounders such as comorbidity and socioeconomic status. The main outcomes and measures were overall survival (OS) and breast cancer–specific survival (BCSS).

According to new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, food intake has a detrimental effect on three generations of offspring—particularly when those descendants have access to unlimited food. Published recently in Blood, the University of Guelph study highlights a compound only found in avocados – avocatin B – that inhibits the enzyme VLCAD, which is highly prevalent in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Because the cancer cells rely on this pathway to survive, scientists are hoping to hold human clinical trials to gauge whether avocatin B can be used as a safer, less toxic treatment than traditional chemotherapy.
