Modern Optometry
Optometry students have navigated unprecedented challenges, embraced technology, and shaped the future of their profession, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to excellence. Optometry students have undergone significant changes and challenges since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden shift to remote learning and the absence of in-person interaction disrupted their programs. However, they persevered, adapted to new norms, and learned valuable lessons about themselves and their profession. During the pandemic, optometry students learned the importance of self-care and compassion. They developed new routines, sought help when needed, and found ways to disconnect and tune into their own needs. By nurturing their humanistic side, they became better clinicians, strengthening their connections with patients. Optometry students also woke up to the need for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. They recognized the lack of representation on their campuses and embraced a commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive environment. They spoke up, advocating for systemic change and pushing for policies and programs that promote DEI. The financial aspect of optometry school remains a challenge for students. With high tuition costs, additional expenses for studying from home, and the burden of student debt, planning for financial stability becomes difficult. Despite these […]

The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences (JNCN)
Delve into the fascinating world of an integrated approach to brain medicine that amalgamates neurology and psychiatry, ushering a new era in patient care. Our understanding of the brain is constantly expanding. This unprecedented knowledge blurs the boundaries between neurology and psychiatry. However, an issue arises: current clinical training maintains a dichotomy stemming from 19th-century practices. This divergence is creating a shift. Neurologists, traditionally untrained in psychiatric management, find themselves treating more psychiatric patients. Likewise, new neuroscience-based precision treatments and diagnostic biomarkers demand skills beyond the psychiatric training purview. This status quo poses a significant challenge to training future doctors. We need to focus on establishing competence in whole-brain aspects and fostering subspecialized expertise. Additionally, implementing feasible and practical programs is paramount. In response, this article proposes a novel 4-year residency program. The first two years concentrate on common and urgent neurology and psychiatry aspects, followed by two years of elective subspecialty tracks. This concept mirrors internal medicine residencies and fellowships, without necessitating changes to existing departmental structures. The article further introduces ‘brain medicine’ as a fitting term for this unified practice. The name emphasizes a holistic focus on all brain aspects. Conventionally, the division between neurology and psychiatry relates […]

Northwestern Medicine
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine has once again been recognized as one of the top medical schools in the nation, ranking 13th among research-oriented institutions, according to the latest US News & World Report rankings. This marks the 16th consecutive year that Feinberg has placed in the top 20. The rankings underwent changes in methodology, incorporating factors such as federal research awards, surveys completed by deans and senior faculty at peer institutions, and entering class data. Feinberg’s commitment to patient-centered care, breakthrough discoveries, innovation, and exceptional medical education remains unwavering. Feinberg’s specialty programs also received recognition, with seven programs ranking among the best in the nation, including obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, anesthesiology, radiology, psychiatry, and internal medicine. The physician assistant program saw a notable improvement in its ranking, moving from 26th to 8th. Additionally, Feinberg’s school of public health ranked 28th. With its rich history, cutting-edge scientific initiatives, and outstanding faculty, Feinberg continues to be a leading institution within Northwestern Medicine, dedicated to advancing healthcare and improving patient outcomes.

Healthgrades for Professionals
Inaccurate forecasts resulted in the opening of very few new medical schools between the late 1970s and early 2000s. Now, although med school class sizes have increased by about 30% over the last two decades, that increase isn’t enough to address the number of positions needed to accommodate the number of applicants or the number of physicians needed in the US.

The viewpoint authors argue that excellence in medical education cannot be reduced to a simple set of scores for ranking. The formula used by USNWR is deeply flawed. The key question is, “what makes a good physician?” There are a multitude of skills and character traits that comprise the answer, and USNWR doesn’t have metrics for those essentials.
