At the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) annual meeting, Carina Venter, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, provided the latest data on the role that maternal diet during pregnancy may have on the infant microbiome and the subsequent development of allergies and asthma. The findings are that eating plenty of vegetables and limited fried, low-fiber, and sugary foods may prevent asthma and allergies in unborn children.

Recent studies identify DNA damage repair (DDR) genes as a new class of endocrine therapy resistance driver that contributes to poor survival among ER+ breast cancer patients. This study reveals differences in DDR regulation in Black women that may in part contribute to the higher breast cancer mortality in Black women vs. other populations. Based on their findings, the authors recommend more effort to refine biomarker profiles to ensure precision medicine for underserved populations.

The CDC has released updated guidelines for prescribing opioids. The newest guidelines focus on patient-centered decisions and reduce some limitations on prescribing that were put in place back in 2016. The updated guidance recognizes the ongoing increase in opioid-related deaths, but seeks to give physicians and patients more direction in managing individual therapy.

A new cohort study has found physical, mental, and cognitive symptoms in patients one year after being treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) for COVID-19. The study involved an exploratory multicenter prospective cohort study that included 246 patients who were alive one year following ICU treatment for COVID-19. Three-quarters of patients reported physical symptoms, 1/4 reported mental symptoms, and about 15% reported cognitive symptoms a year after being hospitalized with the respiratory illness.

Presented at SABCS 2021, the EMERALD Study of elacastrant and the PHOEBE Trial of pyrotinib showed a better than doubling of 12-month PFS with the first agent, and an improvement in both OS and PFT with the second agent. And the results of the DESTINY-Breast03 study have been called “practice changing.”

Although there now exist many safe and approved therapeutics for non-hospitalized patients who have COVID-19 or one of its variants, these therapies are often distributed in an ineffective and unequitable manner, according to an article published by JAMA Network. The article highlights many of the available therapies and how to distribute them fairly to patients when demand exceeds available supply.
