The National Cancer Database analysis highlights the difficulty in identifying a single time point before which primary surgery should be completed in patients with breast cancer. There were two major findings: (1) 12% of patients who had surgery more than 8 weeks after diagnosis had significantly lower overall survival, and (2) patients with lower socioeconomic status had a longer time to surgery.

In this international, phase 3 trial, patients with large B-cell lymphoma who were refractory to or had relapsed no more than 12 months after first-line chemoimmunotherapy were randomly assigned to receive axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel, an autologous anti-CD19 chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy) or standard care in a 1:1 ratio. Axi-cel therapy resulted in significant improvements in event-free survival and response when compared to standard care, with the expected level of high-grade toxic effects.

Zev Wainberg, MD, professor of medicine and co-director of the UCLA GI Oncology Program at the University of California, Los Angeles, presented the results of the NAPOLI-3 trial at the ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium last month, and in this podcast, he discusses the data with Bob Figlin, MD, the Steven Spielberg Family Chair in Hematology-Oncology at Cedars-Sinai Cancer. In addition, the physicians discuss what advances might be on the horizon in the metastatic setting and in earlier disease, as well as what factors influence Dr. Wainberg’s treatment decisions.

A look into the results of a few patients that took part in a phase 1/2 trial at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City: a woman who had breast cancer for 23 years and gone through 12 lines of therapy and a man with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) since 2017. Both showed complete response to the novel vaccine.

There were 55,188 applicants to US medical schools for the 2022-2023 admissions cycle, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Each of these applicants applied to 18 different medical schools, for a total of over 990,000 applications across all schools. In-state applicants outnumber out-of-state applicants. Among the 55,188 applicants, 24.6% enrolled in a medical school in their home state; 16.5% enrolled out of state. The remaining 59% were either rejected or chose not to enroll. Male medical students are now outnumbered by female students. There were 55% females and 45% males among the 22,692 first-year enrollees. Repeat applicants made up a sizable 30% of matriculants in the 2022-2023 admissions cycle.
