JNP: The Journal for Nurse PractitionersAssessing Patient Enablement and Satisfaction After Consultation with an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the Injuries Area of an Irish Emergency Department

ℹ️ Observational Association Only Evidence

As advanced nurse practitioner roles expand within emergency care, health systems increasingly seek patient-centered outcome measures beyond satisfaction alone. This Irish emergency department study evaluated both satisfaction and patient enablement following ANP-led treatment of minor injuries.

Clinical Considerations

  • 106 patients completed a validated survey following ANP-led emergency department care for minor injuries.
  • 93.7% reported high satisfaction and 85.3% reported improved enablement after consultation.
  • Communication quality correlated with satisfaction (rho=0.321; P<.001) and enablement (rho=0.195; P=.048).
  • 98.1% of respondents reported treatment and discharge within the department’s 6-hour target.

Practice Applications

  • Recognize patient enablement as a complementary outcome beyond satisfaction scores.
  • Interpret communication quality as a potential contributor to positive patient experiences.
  • Monitor patient-reported outcomes when evaluating advanced practice provider services.
  • Integrate patient education and shared decision-making into emergency care encounters.
