This activity aims to educate the multidisciplinary care team treating pediatric ADHD, including psychiatrists, pediatricians, PCPs, pharmacists, and dietitians/nutritionists. After completion, participants will be better able to describe the role of dietary deficiencies of essential fatty acids (EFAs) and genetic variants of metabolism in the pathophysiology of ADHD; review the most recent data on the safety and efficacy of supplementation with EFAs for ADHD management in children and adolescents; differentiate dietary supplements from medical foods; and create personalized nutritional therapy plans for ADHD patients by considering the individual needs of each patient and the differences among available dietary products.

The mass in the young child’s head was a “malformed monochorionic diamniotic twin,” which means that the fetuses shared the same placenta but had separate amniotic sacs in the womb. The phenomenon of one fetus becoming enveloped by another is known as “fetus in fetu” (“parasitic twin”), and it occurs in approximately 1 in 500,000 live births. The malformed fetus usually appears as a mass in the abdomen of the other fetus, wedged behind the abdominal wall tissues. In this case, however, the mass appeared in the “host” fetus’s head and most likely arose very early in development.

All agree that the well-being of the patient is paramount. But how to find that in the midst of so much hostility and criticism? When the evidence base is weak or disputed, other factors must be weighed, such as how invasive is the recommended intervention.

It is especially important to educate physicians who provide primary care to patients of these ages about spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and other neuromuscular diseases. Shortening diagnostic times is critical for the success of current therapies, and neonatal SMA screening programs have a high potential for identifying affected children.

In this study of 243 adolescent and adult patients, addition of Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) to standard drug therapy netted seizure reduction of >50% in 26% of patients in the intervention arm versus 2.5% in the control group.
