📡 Surveillance / Emerging Signal
CDC surveillance has identified more than 4,000 confirmed cyclospora infections across multiple states during the 2026 outbreak season. Although iceberg lettuce was initially investigated, the FDA later reported that a suspected positive test should be considered a false positive.
Patient Counseling Points
- Cyclospora infection typically causes prolonged watery diarrhea, bloating, fatigue, nausea, and weight loss.
- Direct person-to-person spread is uncommon because the parasite requires environmental maturation before becoming infectious.
- Severe dehydration risk is greatest among older adults, children, and immunocompromised patients.
- Untreated illness may persist for weeks, even when symptoms appear to improve temporarily.
Patient Care Applications
- Recognize prolonged watery diarrhea as a potential outbreak-related symptom.
- Interpret negative routine stool testing cautiously when suspicion remains high.
- Warn higher-risk patients about dehydration and electrolyte disturbances.
- Redirect symptomatic patients toward medical evaluation and diagnostic testing.
