Muscle dysmorphia (MD), sometimes referred to as “reverse” or “big” anorexia (colloquially called “bigorexia”) is on the rise, and this article presents a comprehensive review on its history, highlights a few studies, provides the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for both MD and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and discusses the behaviors associated with the conditions, including risk factors, comorbidities, and complications. In addition, the author provides questions to ask to ascertain whether MD may be present.

Seven studies totaling 802 patients investigated the primary outcome of change in 100-point vertigo visual analog scale scores at around 2 hours following treatment with an antihistamine or benzodiazepine in this systematic review and meta-analysis of 1,586 participants within 17 trials. Antihistamines improved patients’ conditions more than benzodiazepines did (difference, 16.1), but they weren’t better than other active comparators such ondansetron, droperidol, metoclopramide, and piracetam.

The idea that depression is brought on by decreased serotonin activity or concentrations is unsupported, according to the authors of a systematic umbrella review, who also challenge the rationale behind the high rates of antidepressant prescription. They claim that certain medical professionals continue to promote the incorrect chemical imbalance explanation of depression, and the public as a whole still accepts it. However, other medical professionals argue that antidepressants continue to be a helpful treatment option for patients in addition to other methods like talking therapy and that the idea that depression is caused by a straightforward chemical imbalance is outdated in any case.

Many academic neurologists, especially younger faculty, are not fully aware that clinical service activities are the main source of medical school funding. The time for research and teaching has decreased, and transparent discussions of these problems and possible solutions are not common. This article strives to discuss the needed balance between education, clinical services, and advancing research.
