A randomized trial showed no significant difference in the rate of invasive melanoma between patients taking daily aspirin and those taking a placebo. There were slightly fewer melanoma events in the aspirin group than in the placebo group — 177 and 189, respectively — but the difference between the groups was not statistically significant (hazard ratio [HR], 0.94; 95% CI, 0.77-1.16; P =.58). Similarly, there were slightly fewer invasive melanoma events in the aspirin group than in the placebo group — 76 and 94, respectively — but the between-group difference was not significant (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.60-1.10; P =.18).

Meaningful advances in sarcoma treatment have been painfully slow. Modern immunotherapy may change that. The article referenced by this editorial reports the results of CMB305 plus atezolizumab or atezolizumab alone in patients with NY-ESO-1–expressing synovial or myxoid round cell liposarcoma. The relevance of this study furthers the data using novel immunotherapeutic strategies, which generate B- and T-cell responses for two rare sarcomas that can serve as a foundation for future trials.

This study randomly assigned participants to receive daily, low-dose antibiotic prophylaxis (n=120) or methenamine hippurate (n=120) for 12 months. Treatment allocation was not masked, and crossover between arms was permitted. The primary clinical outcome measure was the incidence of symptomatic, antibiotic-treated UTI episodes reported by participants over the treatment period. The urinary antiseptic methenamine hippurate was found to be noninferior to prophylactic antibiotics in preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women who had them repeatedly. Results were published March 9 by The British Medical Journal (BMJ).

A meta-analysis published in JAMA Internal Medicine has concluded that the link between statin-induced LDL lowering and reduction of CV outcomes may not be as robust as previously assumed. According to the researchers, the absolute risk reduction associated with statin use for all-cause mortality was 0.8% (95% CI, 0.4-1.2), whereas for MI it was 1.3% (95% CI, 0.9-1.7) and for stroke it was 0.4% (95% CI, 0.2-0.6). Absolute risk reduction figures were slightly higher for secondary prevention than for primary prevention.

A class action lawsuit against TeamHealth has concluded with a $15 million award settlement to be shared by some 3,000 emergency physicians in almost every US state. The doctors named in the court case alleged that TeamHealth, one of the nation’s largest medical staffing companies with 15,000 physicians, and its subsidiary Paragon Contracting Services, LLC, were in breach of their contracts and secretly cheated doctors out of a portion of the bonuses they were promised. The physicians claimed that their contracts required TeamHealth to pay them a bonus when they supervised care provided by a physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or other advanced practice provider (APP), but that did not happen.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is taking issue with the US Senate’s recently passed legislation that will make daylight saving time (DST) permanent starting in 2023. AASM cautions that this permanent change would lead to health risks that include adverse cardiovascular events, mood disorders, and motor vehicle crashes. The group advocates for establishing permanent standard time instead.
