It may not come as a surprise that there are so many doctors running for politics given that healthcare is a major legislative priority. According to the Patients Action Network of the American Medical Association, 19 doctors are currently serving in the 118th Congress. The task ahead for these 19 congressional representatives will be challenging. The AMA is concentrated on stopping Medicare payment cuts and implementing prior authorization reform among the myriad healthcare concerns facing the nation.

Today’s understanding is that “pimping” on rounds and similar tactics tend to inhibit rather than promote learning. Yet residents and fellows, and to a lesser extent medical students, continue to complain of demeaning interactions in medical learning environments. Icahn School of Medicine instituted a system to take in reports of such behavior in an attempt to improve the educational environment there. In their model, the instructor is informed that an individual perceived a degrading interaction. The purpose is to allow the instructor to be aware and make changes as needed. But institutions who want to follow the example of the school need to be prepared to allocate the needed resources to do this follow up if the system is to have any benefit.

The pandemic has caused doctors stress, financial loss, and other issues, (approximately 8% of doctors (representing about 16,000 practices) closed their doors in 2020), but physician dissatisfaction with the profession has been an issue for years. According to a 2018 survey, 54% of those polled were thinking about retiring in the next five years (including 30% of those under 50). Why?
