Investigators analyzed dietary and health data from more than 112,000 participants enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study to examine whether sugar-sweetened beverage intake was associated with gastric cancer risk. Over follow-up, 278 participants developed gastric cancer. Compared with individuals consuming fewer than one sugar-sweetened beverage per month, those consuming these beverages daily experienced a substantially higher incidence of gastric cancer. Researchers also observed a relationship between higher fructose intake and greater gastric cancer incidence. Because this was an observational cohort study, the findings indicate an association rather than proof of a causal relationship. Potential confounders, including Helicobacter pylori infection, diet, obesity, smoking, alcohol use, and other lifestyle factors may contribute to the observed association.
