This interview with Roger McIntyre, MD, professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at the University of Toronto, highlights the key points from his presentation at the 2022 NEI Congress. Dr. McIntyre discusses the different clinical presentations and gives an overview of the most effective pharmacologic treatments for each disorder.

This prospective cohort study measured cardiac arrhythmias in patients with chronic drug-resistant epilepsy. Using subcutaneous cardiac monitors programmed to record episodes of tachycardia, bradycardia, or asystole ≥3 seconds, 90% of study patients had episodes of sustained tachycardia, 25% had bradycardia and nearly 10% had asystole.

Compared with enhanced drivers’ education, use of a computerized skills training program in teens learning to drive reduced two-second glances away from the road by 25% and reduced rates of collision or near-collision by 40%. These results persisted in the year after the training.

The combined analysis showed that therapist-led CBT, lisdexamfetamine, SGAs, and topiramate reduced binge eating and related obsessions and compulsions. Lisdexamfetamine and topiramate reduced weight. SGAs reduced symptoms of depression.

According to the most recent Physician’s Desk Reference, 22 of the top 100 best-selling systemic drugs in the United States have been linked to dry eye. Furthermore, eight of the nine systemic drugs secreted into the tear film have been linked to induce dry eye, including common OTC medications aspirin and ibuprofen. This article will review and provide common examples of many of the medications on this list by class, as well as discuss the mechanism of causation and offer management and treatment approaches.
