An observational analysis reviewed 54 studies and two medical record databases with data for 1.2 million individuals, to determine how many people experienced at least 1 of the 3 self-reported Long COVID symptom clusters 3 months after infection. The results indicate a Long COVID rate of 6.2%: 3.7% for ongoing respiratory problems, 3.2% for persistent fatigue with bodily pain or mood swings, and 2.2% for cognitive problems.

Nearly 20,000 mother-child pairs were tracked over a median follow-up of 4 years. After adjusting for maternal risk factors and their children’s own ultra-processed food intake, physical activity, and sedentary time, maternal consumption of ultra-processed foods during the child-rearing period was associated with overweight or obesity in offspring with a 26% higher risk in the group with the highest maternal ultra-processed food consumption.

Practical Pain Management
Neurology referrals for headache are often unnecessary and delay appropriate headache care. A Geisinger Medical Center neurologist developed a tool that pops up on the EMR when the diagnosis of headache is entered. It guides with questions and suggested medications. The tool was developed in response to a chart review showing that referrals for headache from PCPs did not regularly document enough data in their notes on headache to reach a viable diagnosis nor were they regularly trying medications before referring.

To assist clinicians in keeping their expertise current, the authors reviewed and summarized the top PC articles of 2020. The analysis included 28 PC intervention trials for heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia.
