Researchers analyzed electronic health records from 384,256 propensity-score-matched pairs to examine whether glaucoma was associated with subsequent neurodegenerative and cognitive diagnoses over 10 years. Glaucoma was associated most strongly with Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia, with risks emerging within the first year and persisting during follow-up. Associations varied by glaucoma phenotype and neurologic outcome. Because the study relied on retrospective administrative data, the findings did not establish causality and require prospective validation.

- Glaucoma was associated with increased Alzheimer disease risk, including a reported relative risk of 1.558.
- Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia risks appeared within one year of glaucoma diagnosis and persisted throughout follow-up.

- Discuss the evidence cautiously, particularly because greater healthcare contact may increase dementia detection among patients with glaucoma.
