Researchers tested an autologous cell therapy designed to restore immune tolerance to myelin by attaching myelin peptides to a patient’s own red blood cells before reinfusion. In a Phase 1b study involving 10 people with MS, the therapy was generally well tolerated and produced immune changes consistent with increased tolerance.
Clinical Considerations
- Regulatory T-cell levels increased following treatment, suggesting an immunologic effect.
- Investigators also observed reductions in neurofilament light chain, a biomarker associated with neuronal injury.
- Clinical and imaging measures remained generally stable during follow-up.
