Neurologic complications of COVID are leading to an increase in demand for both acute and long-term neurologic evaluation and management. Reported neurologic complications of monkeypox include headaches and mood disturbances, and more rarely, encephalitis, transverse myelitis, and seizures. Of concern is the possibility of viral persistence and systemic complications in immunocompromised individuals. This single-center observational study sought to assess the diagnosis of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) in patients with unexplained neurological symptoms occurring in the setting of long COVID. Fifty patients were included in the study. SSD diagnosis based on DSM-5 criteria was positive in 32 (64%) patients. In the remaining 18 patients, SSD was considered possible given the high score on diagnostic scales.

According to Paul Harrison, FRCPsych, of the University of Oxford in England, and colleagues, health records of nearly 1.3 million people, mostly in the US, revealed that risks of cognitive deficit (brain fog), dementia, psychotic disorders, and epilepsy or seizures were elevated at 2 years for adults who had COVID. Adult COVID patients had an increased risk of anxiety and depression in the first six months, but this risk decreased over time, the researchers reported in Lancet Psychiatry.
