Although recent advancements in breast cancer treatment have led to a decrease in mortality rates, the prevalence of survivors with a potentially high CV disease risk has increased.

The data was presented to the FDA, which reported 789 cases of myocarditis/pericarditis – predominantly in males – after receiving the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, most commonly after the second dose. Symptoms included chest pain, elevated cardiac enzymes, ST or T wave changes, dyspnea, and abnormal echocardiography/imaging for those ages 30 years and younger.

The action comes after observational evidence associating the HeartWare left ventricular assist device (LVAD) with increased neurological adverse events and mortality, as well as more than 100 complaints involving delay or failure to restart. First approved in November 2012, the LVAD has been implanted in approximately 2,000 US patients experiencing end-stage heart failure.

Most cases have been among male adolescents and young adults ages 16 and older, typically occurring within several days after the second dose of m-RNA COVID-19 vaccine.
