Per Svenningsson, MD, PhD, a neurologist with expertise in Parkinson’s disease, will serve as the multicenter trial’s principal investigator. He previously oversaw a clinical study using montelukast (Singulair) tablets to treat PD. The multicenter trial is anticipated to begin between July and September. During the 18-month trial, participants will be randomized to receive either montelukast VersaFilm or a placebo film. IntelGenx plans to use the results to enhance the clinical development of its montelukast VersaFilm for Parkinson’s.

Of the four most commonly prescribed antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in the UK, carbamazepine wasn’t significantly associated with Parkinson’s, but three AEDs did have a significant relationship, including lamotrigine, levetiracetam, and sodium valproate.

In a trial randomizing 372 participants to deferiprone or placebo, nigrostriatal iron content decreased more in the deferiprone group than in the placebo group, but that didn’t correlate to a clinical benefit. Instead, 22% of those on the chelator required initiation of dopaminergic therapy versus 2.7% of those in the placebo group.

Along with well-known prodromal features like tremor, other signs were identified as potential early indicators. These include sensory skin changes, diabetes, inflammatory conditions, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome.

In an article originally published in JAMA Neurology, the authors state that long-term clinical and cinematic follow-up point to young-onset tremor-dominant idiopathic Parkinson’s disease rather than boxing injury.

The evidence for NAD supplement effectiveness at present comes only from animal models and very small-scale human studies. And some studies link excessive consumption of NADH to anxiety and insomnia, and NAD precursors to Parkinson’s disease and diabetes.
